The IELTS Listening test has four sections and 40 questions. The recording is played once, and you hear it for about 30 minutes, followed by time to transfer answers. Section 1 is an everyday conversation, Section 2 is a talk, Section 3 is a discussion between students and Section 4 is an academic lecture.

Candidates most often lose marks by missing the answer while reading ahead, writing a plural without the s, or changing a correct answer at the last moment. Practising with single-play audio helps you build the habit of reading ahead, listening for signposts and spelling answers carefully.

A form-completion question, explained

What you hear (Section 1 extract)

“So that’s a single room for three nights. Could I take your name? It’s Hossain, that’s H-O-S-S-A-I-N. And a contact number? Yes, it’s oh-one-seven…”

  • Name: ________
  • Type of room: ________
  • Number of nights: ________

Answers and reasons

Name: Hossain. The name is spelled out, so copy it letter by letter.

Type of room: single. It is stated directly as “a single room”.

Number of nights: three (or 3). It follows “for” in “for three nights”.

Tip: spelling counts. Wrong spelling is marked wrong, and so is going over the word limit. Read ahead so you know what kind of answer to expect.
