How IELTS Writing practice works on LingaLive

  1. 01

    Choose a task

Pick a Task 1 report or a Task 2 essay from the practice library and start the timer.

  2. 02

    Write under exam conditions

Task 1 is about 20 minutes and at least 150 words. Task 2 is about 40 minutes and at least 250 words.

  3. 03

    Get criterion-by-criterion feedback

See an estimated band, what is holding it back and what to change in your next response.

IELTS Writing has two tasks and one hour. Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1, so a strong essay matters most. In Academic you describe a chart, table, graph or process in Task 1. In General Training you write a letter.

Writing is where many candidates lose their target band without knowing why. A response can be well written and still score low because it does not fully answer the question, repeats the same linking words or contains small grammar errors in every sentence. Feedback tied to the four criteria shows you exactly which of these is costing marks.

Writing Task 2

Some people believe that university students should study only subjects that will help them find a job. Others think students should study whatever interests them.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Introduction and first paragraph of a band 7 essay

Opinions differ on whether university students should choose subjects for their employment value or for personal interest. While career-focused study has clear practical advantages, I believe that genuine interest usually leads to better long-term outcomes.

Those who favour job-related subjects point out that a degree is a major investment. In a competitive job market such as Bangladesh, graduates in fields like engineering or accounting often find work more quickly, which helps them repay family sacrifices and gain financial security.

Why this works: the introduction paraphrases the question and states a clear position, and the paragraph opens with one main idea supported by a specific example. Aim for at least 250 words, with each paragraph developing a single point.

The four criteria your Writing is marked on

Your Writing band is built from four equally weighted criteria. Task 1 and Task 2 are marked separately, and Task 2 counts for more.

Task Achievement / Task Response
Whether you answer every part of the question, with a clear position and developed ideas (Task 2) or an accurate overview of the key data (Task 1).
Coherence and Cohesion
Logical paragraphing and progression, with linking words used naturally rather than mechanically.
Lexical Resource
The range and accuracy of your vocabulary, including less common words used correctly and avoiding repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
A variety of sentence structures with few errors. Error-free sentences are a key marker of higher bands.
